The cost-of-living crisis is of increasing concern for everyone, but those diagnosed with a terminal illness have a disproportionate risk of falling into fuel poverty. The three-year £1.7 million partnership between the Gas Distribution Networks and Marie Curie launched in November 2022 at a crucial time for those at the end of life, enabling: · The recruitment of Energy Support Officers to Marie Curie’s Information & Support line, providing in-depth information on the grants and benefits available to support patients and families with rising energy bills and the cost of living. · Bespoke fuel poverty awareness training rolled out to Marie Curie healthcare professionals to identify those struggling to pay their bills and signpost to support available. Impact after one year of partnership has been incredible with: · 572 Marie Curie healthcare staff completing fuel poverty awareness training · 2,705 people with a terminal illness supported by Energy Support Officers · Over £1,250,649 worth of benefits identified for those in need · 11,177 people accessed energy resources on Marie Curie website. With at least two years to go, this partnership will continue to support those at the end of life across the UK struggling with the rising cost-of-living.
