The cost of dying. Supporting terminally ill people through the cost-of-living crisis.

SGN

Client: Marie Curie

Marie Curie’s Community Companion Service with SGN addresses the cost-of-living crisis by supporting people living with terminal illness, and those close to them, who are affected by rising energy costs and fuel poverty. Since December 2024, the service has reached undeserved communities across three locations in the South of England, helping those who are less likely to access support due to deprivation, language barriers and cultural perceptions around illness, death and finances. It’s funded through Ofgem’s Vulnerability and Carbon Monoxide Allowance.

Marie Curie staff and volunteers engage directly with vulnerable households via a two-tier, community-led approach. They provide energy advice, Priority Services Register sign-ups and safeguarding support through trusted local establishments such as food banks, GP surgeries and libraries. Trained Community Companions then offer one-to-one companionship, emotional and practical help, including benefits checks, income maximisation and carbon monoxide awareness.

Between December 2024 and December 2025, the partnership delivered 6,943 episodes of targeted support, trained over 80 professionals and volunteers, distributed more than 19,000 energy resources and generated 1,956 additional outcomes such as debt advice, tariff reviews and warm home discount referrals.

This partnership demonstrates how trusted community engagement and energy expertise can deliver meaningful, life-changing support during the cost-of-living crisis.
