STEM futures for young people in Selby and North Yorkshire

The collaboration between the Drax Community & Education team and SKILLZ CIC is a targeted, place-based initiative that uses STEM education and workplace visits to improve life chances for children and young people across Selby and North Yorkshire. The project prioritises pupils from underserved communities, including those at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training).

Through a blended programme of classroom learning, real-world experiences and sustained mentoring, the partnership brings STEM subjects to life. Educational tours of Drax Power Station give young people first-hand insight into large-scale engineering, renewable energy, and future careers in science and technology. These experiences are reinforced by curriculum-linked STEM education delivered in local schools, helping pupils connect learning with practical application.

Nature-based learning sessions at the Skylark Centre further broaden engagement, using the outdoor environment to build confidence, teamwork and problem-solving skills while strengthening understanding of sustainability and the natural world. Alongside this, SKILLZ CIC provides tailored mentoring and positive role models for children at risk of disengagement, supporting both academic progress and personal development.

Together, SKILLZ CIC and Drax are creating inclusive, inspiring pathways that raise aspirations, build skills and help young people envision a positive future in education and employment.
