Safety First and Energy Smart Scouts with Gas Distribution Networks

The UK’s Gas Distribution Networks (GDNs) and Scouts have worked in partnership to tackle two urgent issues: carbon monoxide (CO) safety and energy efficiency for five years. CO poisoning leads to around 4,000 A&E attendances annually in the UK, yet awareness remains low and is not covered in the national curriculum. Scouts’ strong culture of camping and outdoor activity also increases exposure to potential CO risks.

Together we developed a national education programme using digital learning, badges and practical activities to teach young people (6-18yrs) and their leaders how to recognise and prevent CO risks and reduce energy use at home. In 2024 we expanded the programme to include energy efficiency, supporting families during the cost-of-living crisis and helping prevent fuel poverty.

The partnership engages 100,000 young people each year on CO safety and a further 100,000 on energy efficiency, alongside 11,600 adult volunteers. Over 2,000 leaders have completed a bespoke e-learning course. Since launch we have delivered 400,000+ youth engagements; reaching over 23,000 volunteers.

By combining GDN technical expertise with Scouts’ national volunteer network, we are creating safer behaviours, spreading knowledge into homes and communities, and delivering measurable social impact aligned with Ofgem safety and energy efficiency priorities.
