Can you imagine gathering firewood under threat of attack from wild elephants, lions or leopards? Or spending your entire day collecting enough wood to burn in your hut to stay safe and warm at night – leaving no time for anything else?

For women in Maasai communities in rural Tanzania, these challenges are a daily reality. But with the help of Smiths Group Foundation and one of its charity partners, Flint Global, women are transforming their daily lives through the introduction of biogas energy. By introducing this safe and renewable fuel source into their homes, they can instead spend time on other activities, such as generating an income for their family.

This is just one example of a project funded by the Smiths Group Foundation, established by the FTSE 100 engineering company Smiths Group, to help deliver on its purpose of engineering a better future. Working closely with experts at the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), the Foundation has so far committed over £3 million to more than 30 charities around the world in the last 3 years. All grants are nominated by employees, assessed against 3 priority grant making themes, and where appropriate matched with pro bono support by skilled
