The UK has one of the worst rates of social mobility in the developed world. Children from lower socio-economic backgrounds do not have the same access to education and employment as those from more affluent families, and the effects can last a lifetime.
Through fundraising, volunteering and pro bono work, Deloitte UK's Responsible Business team is helping charity Teach First to create a fairer education system for all, giving less advantaged pupils hope of a better future.
The partnership began in 2006 and, 14 years later, is still going strong. In total, we've donated £1.9million, supported 632 new teachers and leaders, and reached 250,000 pupils.
In 2020, we also helped our 26 partner schools to tackle the unique challenges created by COVID-19. Our usual volunteering activities, such as mentoring and motivational talks, were halted but we still found ways to offer support, including a much-needed financial boost. This was vital given that Teach First research shows the disruption to learning has negatively impacted children from poorer backgrounds the most.
Our partnership is making a real difference to young lives. It's also enabling Deloitte to achieve its purpose: to make an impact that matters for our people, our clients and society.
