The UN calls the ocean ‘the world’s greatest ally against climate change’ because it absorbs 30 percent of all human-originating carbon dioxide emissions. It is the world’s largest carbon sink and plays a crucial role in stabilising our climate. As greenhouse emissions grow, the health of the ocean and its ability to alleviate climate change is under threat.

The Convex Seascape Survey is a five-year multi-sector partnership to better understand the ocean’s crucial role in stabilising our climate. Convex Insurance Group, Blue Marine Foundation and the University of Exeter, have brought together over 100 world experts, pioneering ideas and the latest technology to investigate the previously underexplored role of marine mud in the Earth’s carbon cycle.

We are building a unique portfolio of impartial, verifiable, open source data to fuel further research, and enable informed climate-smart ocean management decisions. We also inspire school learners and the wider public with the ocean’s vital role in safeguarding life on planet Earth and encourage the public to advocate for ocean protection. Our aim is to fully integrate the ocean into future efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change and preserve a liveable planet.
