Client: Teach First

Amazon Future Engineer (AFE) is a comprehensive childhood-to-career programme that aims to inspire, educate and enable children and young adults from lower-income backgrounds to explore computer science, and support diverse talent. AFE offers a variety of benefits, including a fully funded Post-Graduate Diploma in Education and Leadership, dedicated support from Amazon including mentors, and access to exclusive opportunities.

Research shows that 54% of secondary schools in England don’t offer GCSE computer science, largely due to a shortfall in qualified teachers, and these shortages are most often in the most deprived area of the country. The current shortfall can result in both educational and economic inequality if young people leave school without in-demand digital skills. Recruiting Computing teachers can be difficult, with stiff competition from the private sector.

For the last 3 years Amazon has been working with education charity Teach First to support the recruitment and training of new secondary school computing teachers in schools serving the poorest communities in the country.

The programme has recruited dozens of teachers in the last 3 years, thereby providing computing education to thousands of children in disadvantaged communities.
