Love of reading is one of the reasons I went into teaching . . . this has motivated me and reminded me of what’s important” – participant
Puffin World of Stories is a partnership between Puffin – the children’s arm of the UK’s largest publisher Penguin – and the UK’s leading literacy charity, the National Literacy Trust.
The project addresses two key challenges: the lack of school librarians, and budget constraints which often mean buying new books is not a viable option.
Working with 58 primary schools (September 2018-July 2019), our aim was to pilot a new and scalable approach to transforming school libraries. Each participating school received for free:
- Bespoke training, online and face-to-face
- 500 free books – new voices and classics
- Audiobook downloads
- Resources including posters, bookmarks and bunting.
Participating schools were based in communities local to our offices and warehouse in South London and Essex, and in areas of low literacy in Tyne & Wear and Middlesbrough. The impact of the programme was significant with 14,500 pupils impacted. 100% of participating teachers felt better equipped to develop a reading community.
As a result of the pilot’s success, we are rolling out Puffin World of Stories to 80 more schools in 2019-2020.
