Future Place Academy/ Building Hope

Saint Gobain UK and Barnardo's

Young people leaving local authority care are amongst the most disadvantaged in the UK, with poorer outcomes than peers across education, accommodation, homelessness and employment.

On average, 40% of care leavers aged 19-21 are not in education, employment or training, compared to 13% of peers, yet at the same time the construction industry is facing a skills shortage. 157,000 new recruits are needed by 2021 in order to keep up with demand.

The Future Place Academy was therefore devised as a truly shared value partnership, with Barnardo's and Saint Gobain bringing our skills, knowledge and resources to support care leaver's complex needs and develop the construction workforce of tomorrow.

By truly collaborating and working closely with young people to design the project, The Academy has helped ensure care leavers have a safe home, education and route into employment.

Our journey has already seen us share learnings with an international audience in America, and be recognised as a best in class case study as part of the Government's care leavers covenant.

We are incredibly excited about growing our partnership as part of Barnardo's wider Building Hope vision, and supporting more care leavers who greatly need a helping hand to achieve their potential.
