Fighting anti-homosexual legislation

Debevoise & Plimpton with The Human Dignity Trust

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." Dr Martin Luther King, Jnr.

Today, there are still 76 countries where same-sex intimacy between consenting adults is a criminal act. This not only impacts the lives of the LGBT+ community living in those countries, but on all LGBT+ people as their freedom to travel and work is severely compromised. Lawyers have an unparalleled ability to change this through strategic litigation and advocacy. That is precisely what our lawyers have been doing in recent years, culminating in in a landmark victory in Belize in 2016.

We worked on a pro bono basis with the Human Dignity Trust to support an action led by Caleb Orozco, Executive President of the United Belize Advocacy Movement. As a result of the action, the Criminal Code of Belize was found to be unconstitutional in its discrimination against consenting LGBT+ adults.

This ruling has had a tremendous impact on the lives of the LGBT+ community in Belize and across the globe. And the impact will be felt for many more years, as this case potentially paves the way for more discriminatory laws to be overturned around the world.
