Festivals are a great time to get people appreciating good sanitation. With sanitary items hard to come by and a lack of soap and running water, keeping yourself clean and managing your period is a huge challenge.
But for many women and girls living in poverty, their life can be like that all the time – no sanitary pads, no proper toilets, no clean water. As a result in Africa, one in ten girls misses school when they have their period.
To communicate this urgent issue to the public, ActionAid partnered with Festival Republic to take over an entire toilet block and surrounding area at Latitude, their pioneering music and arts festival held annually in the Suffolk countryside.
The results were exceptional; 'the ActionAid Loos' partnership reached 135,000 people (30,000 at Latitude and 105,000 on digital media), fundraised over £4.1k for projects and signed up 532 new supporters. ActionAid and Festival Republic are delighted to announce that based on these results the partnership has been renewed for another two years.
