White Ribbon Scotland and the Association of British Bookmakers in Scotland (ABB Scotland) - the trade association for high street bookmakers - have formed a partnership to raise awareness about domestic abuse by targeting men in betting shops. In Scotland alone, bookmakers attract around 650,000 customers, primarily men, making them an ideal location through which to engage a traditionally 'hard to reach' demographic. With the support of ABB members and their employees, and working in partnership with elected officials, colleges and community groups, two campaigns were launched in 2018, targeting parts of Glasgow and South Lanarkshire. During these relatively short campaigns, over 1,300 customers (mostly men) signed the White Ribbon Scotland pledge 'never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women in all its forms.' Both campaigns secured considerable print and social media coverage and were showcased in the annual White Ribbon Scotland conference as examples of effective partnership. The partnership has continued in 2019, with campaigns in Inverness and Edinburgh securing a further 900 pledges, taking the total so far to 2,200, and more campaigns are scheduled in the coming months. This has been a truly collective effort involving multiple partners, and underlines the constructive role betting shops play in their local communities.
