All Aviva employees get three days’ paid volunteering leave a year – but there’s a difference between being given something and taking it. We want to help employees overcome the barriers to giving their time in support of good causes and prove that we’re serious about building stronger communities together.
 
We set ourselves a bold two-year challenge: to fund over £1,000,000 of community investment activity through employee volunteering. To achieve this, we need to boost the volunteering hours taken by Aviva staff from 17,500 to 50,000.
 
In 2019, we created a high-profile, integrated engagement programme targeting our own Volunteering Week in early summer. We worked with pre-identified charity partners to organise a packed seven-day calendar of local volunteering opportunities that our employees could easily sign up to. We held impactful Volunteer Roadshows at Aviva offices throughout the UK, bringing in charities to engage directly with staff and encourage participation.
 
Our programme was a huge success. Substantial numbers of employees donated their time during Volunteering Week, and, even more pleasingly, the momentum continued throughout the rest of the year. We’re extremely proud of our Aviva colleagues’ achievements and, with awareness now high, are confident 2020 will be our best year yet.
